New Rugby Services has 12x 350 kW chargers

The site is located at MOTO’s brand-new Rugby services at Junction 1 of the M6 and offers a total of 12 ultra-fast charging stalls (350 kW chargers each). The chargers were supplied by Tritium.

It’s game-changing for Electric Highway, which entered into the EV game early, but then faded behind with old 50 kW chargers and poor reliability.

Now, the old chargers will be replaced with new ones (more reliable, higher power and with two power outputs), and on top of that, the company will install new 350 kW ultra-fast chargers (6-12 per site).

Ecotricity and Gridserve have opened the UK motorway network’s largest high-powered EV charging station, kick-starting their Electric Highway joint initiative.

Update: Gridserve has now bought out Ecotricity.

The site in Rugby is the first new Motorway services of any kind to be opened in the UK for 13 years. It’s fitted with 12 ultra-rapid 350kW chargers, provided by Gridserve and Ecotricity.

According to the firms, these chargers have the capacity to add up to 200 miles of electric range in around 10 minutes. They offer all three connection types – CCS, Type 2 AC and Chademo – and accept contactless card payment.

Gridserve and Ecotricity plan to open similar sites in Reading, Thurrock and Exeter by the end of 2021.

Moto, moreover, intends to have 28 sites with ultra-rapid chargers by the same date. It aims to bring at least six rapid chargers to every Moto station by the end of 2023.

Note that the 10 minute time assumes the car is capable of actually charging at 350kW, currently very few can.
